ECHO is PDP’s Charity of the Year

PDP chose ECHO as its charity for 2018 as it remains very close to the heart of PDP’s Technical Director, Tom Fairbrother. Tom and Rebecca’s son Lewis was born in 2014 with an undiagnosed heart defect and had to undergo unexpected complex heart surgery at just five months old. Without the surgery and the support from the Evelina Children’s Heart Organisation he wouldn’t be the happy and outgoing child he is today. The Evelina Children’s Heart Organisation (ECHO) has been selected as PDP Services Charity of the Year for 2018.

Tom Fairbrother said: ‘ECHO supports families in so many ways; whether you are expecting a baby with a heart defect, you have a child who has got to undergo major heart surgery, you are a teenager who has had heart surgery as a child or whether you are a family who has lost a child – they are there for you every step of the way.’

ECHO supports children and young people with heart conditions and their families, who have been treated by the Evelina London Children’s Hospital networks. Congenital heart disease is the most common birth defect affecting 9 in 100 babies born in the UK. ECHO helps from diagnosis, which is often during pregnancy, throughout any treatment and care pathway or bereavement. Families are supported at every stage of their heart child’s journey throughout childhood, teenage years and during the transition to adult services. ECHO supports members from across the UK and does so within the Evelina London, local general hospitals and the community.

PDP Services has committed all its annual fundraising efforts to help the charity. PDP will fundraise and increase awareness of ECHO throughout 2018 in a bid to raise funds to help support more children and young people with heart conditions and their families.

The money raised by PDP Services will go towards the different channels ECHO uses to help support the children and families, including a Cardiac Family Support Service, items of necessary equipment needed for the hospital or home that cannot be funded by the NHS, parent-to-parent support, online forum, antenatal classes, music therapist, comfort packs, toys and crafts, emergency accommodation, bereavement support and events.
