Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) came into effect on 1st April 2022, replacing the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).

As of the 23rd October 2023, the original Boiler Upgrade Scheme scheme of up to £6000 will increase to £7500. This government scheme will provide grants of £7500 for heat pump installations on existing domestic and small non-domestic properties. New builds are exempt, unless it is a self-build.

The funding is not available for the replacement of existing low carbon heating systems. Only properties which are fully replacing existing fossil fuel systems (such as oil, gas or direct electric) will be eligible for the scheme.

If eligible, the scheme allows for £7,500 off the cost and installation of an air source or ground source heat pump

You may be eligible if you:

• live in England or Wales
• own the property (whether this is a domestic or a small non-domestic property)

The property will need to have:

• an installation capacity up to 45kWth (this covers most homes)
• a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation (unless there’s an insulation exemption)

How to Apply

If you think the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is suitable for you, the first step is to find a Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) Certified Installer, such as PDP Services. It is only MCS Certified Installers that can apply to Ofgem for a grant on your behalf.

PDP Services will visit your property, assess suitability, and provide an estimate for replacing your existing fossil fuel heating system (gas and lpg boilers or direct electric heating) with an air source or ground source heat pump.

If you agree to the estimate, PDP will then apply for the BUS grant on your behalf. Ofgem will contact you to check the validity of your application.

Once PDP has installed your new heating system, PDP will commission the system and redeem the voucher to receive the grant, which will be deducted from the final invoice.
